As one who has attended her fair share of weddings, the moment the couple starts the first dance at a wedding still gets me. Every. Single. Time. I think the first dance usually triggers all of my heart pangs because of the music. The song a couple chooses to dance to for the first time is downright sacred. That said, it’s 2018, and I’m a little burnt out on Ed Sheeran, thank you very much. So what are the best first dance songs?

The most important consideration to make when choosing a first dance song is that you choose something meaningful to you and your partner? Did you meet in high school, listening to Dave Matthew’s Band? Go for it! When a song like “Crush” actually has a personal connection to you and your person, it’s no longer cheesy or overdone.

To find the songs with the right mix of meaning and originality, I checked out Spotify’s list of top 50 first dance songs. Spotify analyzed thousands of playlists using the words “first dance” and compiled a list of the top songs. After peeping the list and adding my own thoughts into the mix, I came up with a pretty solid list of the all-time best first dance songs for you to consider for your wedding. Here’s your inspiration:

15. “La Vie En Rose” by Edith Piaf

French, classic, and all about the romance of how everyday things become beautiful when you’re in love, this is a great choice.

14. “All Of Me” by John Legend

This passionate love song about the world’s best celebrity couple is a perfect note to start your marriage on.

13. “The Way You Look Tonight” by Tony Bennett

Classic vibes for a classic couple, this oldie-but-goodie will get everyone in a celebratory mood along with you.

12. “XO” by Beyonce

Queen Bey croons about love in a modern and relatable way. Great for the couple that takes their love seriously, but not too seriously.

11. “Sea of Love” by Cat Power

The sweet, indie song is perfect for the minimalist couple who might be a little shy about dancing in front of a crowd.

10. “Heroes” by David Bowie

An epic song by an epic artists, this less traditional pick is perfect for the couple who loves Bowie, or just good music, in general.

9. “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne

Upbeat yet romantic, this Ray Lamontagne song feels both classic and modern at the same time. Perfect for a party.

8. “Fly Me To The Moon” by Frank Sinatra

This timeless tune is reminiscent of that sweet butterflies that come with falling for someone, which is exactly what you’ll want to relive on your big day.

7. “Home” by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

This relatively simple indie song is quite possibly the most romantic song of all time.

6. “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Lauryn Hill

This is the best way to keep your wedding modern and also include one of the best voices of all time at your wedding.

5. “As” by Stevie Wonder

Classic, with a powerful message, this Stevie Wonder song is perfect for your first dance.

4. “First Day Of My Life” by Bright Eyes

All about starting a new chapter, this song is perfect for the very first day of your new life.

3. “In My Life” by The Beatles

This Beatles’ classic is all about acknowledging your past, and also acknowledging how your partner is the one you love most.

2. “Maps” by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

This indie classic by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs is less commonly played at weddings, but fully romantic. Guaranteed to bring a tear to your guests’ eyes.

1. “At Last” by Etta James

Just because this is a popular first dance song does not mean it’s not a wonderful first dance song. Etta James’ magical voice and the song’s very relevant lyrics are why this song is so very popular amongst couples.
